Most small factories in Chennai do not need a big-company ERP. They need to stop losing track of three things: what raw material is in the store, what is half-made on the floor, and what has been promised to which customer. This guide sets out what Odoo can realistically take over for a small manufacturing unit, what it will not fix by itself, and how to start without disrupting production.

Short answer. Start with sales orders, purchase, stock and GST invoicing. Add the bill of materials and production orders once stock is accurate. Keep Tally for accounts if your accountant prefers it, and connect the two. Do not start with a full plan that tries to model every machine and shift.

Signs a small factory has outgrown Excel and WhatsApp

  • The stock figure in the register and the physical count disagree every month.
  • Nobody can say, without phoning the store, whether a customer's order can be dispatched today.
  • Purchase is decided by whoever remembers what is running low.
  • The cost of a finished item is a guess, because material, labour and scrap are not tracked per order.
  • Quotations, delivery challans and invoices are typed three times.

If none of these sound familiar, you probably do not need an ERP yet. If two or three do, read on.

What Odoo will not fix by itself

  • Untidy item masters. The same item entered under three names will be three items in Odoo too. Clean-up comes first.
  • Unwritten processes. Odoo asks who approves, who issues material and who closes an order. If nobody has decided, the software exposes it rather than solving it.
  • Shop-floor discipline. A production order is only as accurate as the entries made against it. Someone has to own the daily entry.

Odoo and Tally together

For many small manufacturers the practical question is not Tally or Odoo but how they work together. A common split is Odoo for orders, purchase, stock and production, with accounting entries going to Tally for the accountant. Another is moving everything to Odoo and keeping the old Tally data as an archive. We compare the two in Tally vs Odoo for a small business, and explain the data side in Tally to Odoo migration. If you want to keep Tally and simply see its data on a phone, see how to see Tally data outside Tally.

A sensible way to start

  1. Walk the floor with us. We map the real flow from enquiry to dispatch, including the parts that happen on paper or WhatsApp.
  2. Fix the masters. Items, units, HSN codes, customers and vendors cleaned before anything is loaded.
  3. Phase one: sales, purchase, stock, GST invoicing. Run it for a month and reconcile stock with a physical count.
  4. Phase two: bill of materials and production orders for your top products, not all of them.
  5. Phase three: costing, reports and approvals, once the data is trustworthy.

Cost: what changes the price

We do not publish a price list for ERP work because two factories with the same headcount can differ widely. What moves the estimate is the number of modules in the first phase, the number of users, how much data is migrated from Tally or Excel, how many custom reports or print formats you need, and where the system is hosted. Odoo Community has no licence fee; Odoo Enterprise is licensed per user directly between you and Odoo. We scope first and give a written estimate you can compare.

FAQs

Odoo for Small Manufacturers — Common Questions

1. Is Odoo suitable for a small manufacturing unit in Chennai?

It can be, if the unit has repeat products, a bill of materials, raw material and finished stock, and orders that are tracked in WhatsApp or Excel today. It is usually too much for a unit that makes a handful of items and has one person who keeps everything in their head. A short scoping call is enough to tell which side you are on.

2. Do I need to stop using Tally if I adopt Odoo?

No. Some units keep Tally for accounts and the auditor, and use Odoo for orders, purchase, stock and production, with a defined hand-off between them. Others move accounts into Odoo as well. Which is right depends on your accountant and how much you rely on Tally reports.

3. Can Odoo handle job work and subcontracting?

Odoo supports subcontracting, where you send material to an outside party and receive the processed goods back. Whether it fits your job-work paperwork and GST challan practice has to be checked against your actual flow before you commit.

4. What does it cost to implement Odoo for a small factory?

It depends on how many modules, how many users, how much data is migrated and how much is customised, so we do not quote a number without seeing the process. Odoo Community has no licence fee; Odoo Enterprise is licensed per user directly with Odoo. We scope the work first and give a written estimate.

5. How long does an Odoo implementation take for a small manufacturer?

A narrow first phase, such as sales, purchase and stock with GST invoicing, can go live much sooner than a full production-planning rollout. We recommend phasing it: get the daily billing and stock right first, then add production and costing.
